Abstract

A shortage of kidneys available for organ transplantation has led to an international market for kidneys. Through lack of proper transplantation programs and enforcement of laws, developing nations are targeted by the organ trade, and poorer citizens are coerced through monetary reward to participate in the harmful transaction. While poor donors believe they will benefit from selling their kidney, they are often left with unforeseen medical complications, stigmatism, and increased debt. Global awareness is essential to prevent participation in the illegal organ trade and to encourage living organ donation to save more lives.
